My good friend Wolfe-- [livejournal.com profile] greyeagle2007 on LJ-- runs a marvelous little curio shop in East Texas with his partner.  They sell a plethora of unique items, candles, antiques, and handmade crafts and jewelry.  This is the sort of shop you always think belongs in a mystical urban fantasy, a little half-hidden building that hovers somewhere between this world and the next, trembling with magic.  And it's about to go out of business.

You see, their air conditioner broke down some time ago, and their landlord refuses to fix it.  They lost over $6000 in merchandise last summer due to the excessive Texas heat.  They're expecting the same this year if they can't get it repaired.

So, they've been setting up a couple of things to try to help fund a replacement a/c unit, or to fix the old one.

They're going to hold a gathering and silent auction at their shop on May 26th.

But Wolfe has also begun a campaign on indiegogo to help pay for the unit.  There are perks-- handmade jewelry.

So go take a look at the campaign and their shop site, and do help spread the word or contribute if you're so inclined!  Also be aware that they take online orders from their web site.  Feel free to browse; you might find something perfectly suited to yourself or someone you love!

So [livejournal.com profile] ariestess held a "Free Microfic Day" yesterday, and I left the prompt, "Multi-dimensional traveler, a cost to traveling, life-changing.  Where is home?"

She wrote this hilarious little fic.

My favorite line:  "And I swear to all that is holy, if you mention fanfiction, I will cut a bitch.  I got caught in this weird causality loop that had me cycling through-- Damn it! Where's a knife?"

Go, read!!

So, today, I'm caretaking for my grandmother.  I hope to be able to do a little artwork this evening, and maybe post some updates.

But at the moment, I don't have my Wacom hooked up, and my laptop battery is starting to get a bit low, so I thought I'd do a post where everyone can pimp their own projects.  So drop by and leave project descriptions, pictures, excerpts, whatever you like in the comments!  Free advertising!  Have at it!

In searching for projects to nominate for this year's Rose and Bay Awards, I stumbled on this little gem:

(From the Wikipedia article) "Pioneer One is a 2010 American web series produced by Josh Bernhard and Bracey Smith.[1][2][3] It has been funded purely through donations, and is the first series created for and released on BitTorrent networks.... A mysterious spaceship enters Earth's atmosphere, triggering a massive response from the American government."

Just watched the preview.  It looks extremely well done!  I would nominate it, but it was released in 2010 and so isn't eligible this year.

Here's a link to the official page with the preview and free download links (streaming is available for a small financial contribution as well):

So, my friend [livejournal.com profile] timelord1 has a large, multiple-story writing project that she's been working on for quite some time, a fantasy she calls "Lost in Ethia."  She's decided to start up a Livejournal for it-- [livejournal.com profile] ethian_wanderer

She has not posted any of her stories yet, as she has just opened the LJ today, but she will do so soon.  I've been following her fan fiction (set in the Doctor Who universe) for some time now, and she is a very talented writer.  I'm looking forward to seeing what she does with this project.

In her words, "My original stories are cheeky high fantasy, taking place in a place called Ethia, featuring an ensemble of characters, with lots of humor, action, drama, romance and angst as well as a boatload of original and varied-ly borrowed mythology, from Celtic to Japanese, a little bit of Greek but mostly all from inside this bizarre head of mine."

So, today is the day known as "Black Friday." All the big chains open their stores early and rake in the cash.

And yeah, sometimes people suffer for it. I remember a few years ago I was working at one of these big chain stores, a Wal Mart, and the story came through during my work day on Black Friday (also "affectionately known as "Blitz Day" to the employees there) about a Wal Mart employee being trampled to death in another state on that very day as he unlocked the doors to let in the throng of humanity waiting to snatch up as many things as possible before everyone else did. It made me physically ill to think of it.

I'm not here to talk trash about monstrous corporations or greedy people, though I likely could go on a rant. As far as Wal Mart especially is concerned, I do understand that many people can't afford to shop anywhere else-- I'm usually one of them. I'm not one to say people should NEVER shop the big chain stores, EVER. But I will say this: There are so very many small businesses struggling to make ends meet. Artisans, craftsmen, booksellers, gift stores, online and in the physical world, all offering wonderful, unique, and high quality merchandise for sale. Yes, prices are often higher than they are at a big discount-chain store, but the quality and attention to detail, and the love that goes into the creations and places of business make SUCH a difference. People who take the time and energy to build and run these small businesses, to create and offer unique crafts and works of art, who don't use cookie-cutter templates and mass-produced claptrap-- well, in a way, they are amongst the backbone of our culture. Never, ever underestimate the power of Art to shape and flavor a culture. These artisans, and the small businesses they run or work in conjunction with, are indispensable.

So, I'll put this forth today, on Black Friday. As the holidays are hovering closer, and you need to do your shopping for your loved ones, don't forget to at least look into some of these small businesses, artisans, creators, those working independent of the big corporations. Please lend your support to them in whatever way you can, whether it be monetary (and I know many have fallen on hard times and can't afford it), or even just word of mouth. It makes all the difference.
