New work in progress: "Ocean Lord"
Nov. 1st, 2012 03:52 pmThis is a sketch I did several years ago with the intent to turn it into a painting.

Starting with the background; still very loose and sketchy, just blocking in the basic colors at this point. I'm going with a cooler palette than I used in my last painting. I'm going to call this one "Ocean Lord."

Will post updates as the painting progresses!
Like what you see on this blog? Feel free to tip the artist! Contributors who are in the US will receive a free print of their choice, either of an already completed work, or the work in progress contributed toward, once complete. Also, size of print depends on contribution amount and sizes available. So if you tip, please let me know in a private message so I can contact you regarding your print.

Getting back in the game
Oct. 20th, 2012 03:44 pmI desperately need to raise prices, because I need the money--especially after the insane number of medical bills I have incurred and am still incurring--but I'm afraid I'm going to shoot myself in the foot by doing so. I have tentative plans. For one, I'm considering hosting weekly $5 Sketch Days, rather than Free Sketch Days, but taking the first five prompts for free. Detailed black and white drawings will ordinarily go for $50 and up, depending on complexity, and Discounted Character Portrait Days will be re-instated on a periodic basis at $30 per portrait. I'll also offer story illustration, both black and white and color, for $50 and up.
I have to remind myself that even these prices are very low for a professional, but I still have this nagging voice in the back of my head that tells me my work isn't good enough to charge that much, that no one will want to pay that much. It's a voice that I'm determined to ignore.
I hope to be delving back into the crowdfunding sometime this coming week. I may test the waters with a $5 Sketch Day.
But anyway! I also come bearing artwork. Paintings and fan art sketches. As always, click for larger.

Artwork update
Apr. 24th, 2012 12:17 pmSo, I know it's been awhile since I've posted artwork here, so I thought I'd post a few of the character portraits I've completed.
I have two left, but here are the four I've completed so far. You guys know the drill in how to enlarge. :)

I also started a new painting to try to coax my muse out of hiding. Well, it's sort of a new painting-- this is actually a redo of an older piece that I never finished. I call it Masquerade. I'm using more of a color-sculpting technique for this one, rather than using a tight line drawing and building on that. Keep in mind that this is VERY rough still, just blocking in basic colors and shapes. This painting has now gone through three re-works. It started off similar to this, with her standing in a maze of arches, in the water. I then moved her into open ocean, with the ruins of an arch in the background. But I think I like the more claustrophobic feel of having her standing within the architecture. I also changed the color scheme a little-- she was wearing a purple gown before, but it blended too much into the indigo/violet shades of the background. And I changed her pose. She will still be standing in seawater, and the mask will be weeping. No clue how long this one will take me, as other projects will take priority, but it'll make a good warmup piece to work on at the beginning of art-days.

(no subject)
Mar. 26th, 2012 10:12 pmI did rough line art for all-- read it, ya'll, ALL-- of the outstanding character portraits. All in one day.
I'm gonna post them here because, well, I'm so happy that I actually got something done without, you know, erasing it five thousand times or getting dragged away two minutes after beginning work, that I could scream.
Fair warning-- these images are still very rough. They need a lot of work. But I completed stage one of portraiture and kicked serious ass today, so you all get to see them.
If Photobucket ever finishes uploading them, that is.

Crowdfunding Pieces Update
Mar. 7th, 2012 09:48 pmAs I mentioned previously, I've finished "Starcrossed."

I did the flat colors for "Trickster."

I worked on the background cliffs in the waterfall painting.

And, I did the inks on "Firespirit." This is being done for the winner of the last prize drawing, and will be available to the general public.

All three of these crowdfunded pieces are still open for funding! U.S. Contributors who contribute $3 or more will receive a complimentary print of the image they helped to fund from Zazzle, and all contributors will receive a full-sized image download. (Size of print depends on amount of contribution; sizes start at 4x6.) Once a piece is fully funded, the full sized image will be released to the public.
Current funding stats are as follows:
"Starcrossed": $4 of $40
"Trickster": $0 of $40
Waterfall painting (as yet untitled): $0 of $100
If you would like to contribute to any or all of these projects, click the "Tip Jar" icon, which will take you to PayPal. Please be sure to leave me a message to let me know who you are and what you're contributing to, so I can be sure to send you your perks!
The New, Re-Vamped Free Sketch Day!
Feb. 28th, 2012 09:55 amEDIT: Thank you to everyone for your prompts! I will be getting to the rest of you who commented tomorrow (I may do another sketch or two tonight, but mostly I'll save them for tomorrow because I want to make sure I give each sketch a good amount of attention). Hope everyone has a good night.
Good morning, friends list, visitors, and lurkers! Once again, it is Tuesday, which means that it is the weekly Free Sketch Day that I host on this blog.
This is the new, revamped Free Sketch Day. There are loads of new tip incentives both collectively and individually, and some new rules. Please be sure to read everything detailed below!
Free Sketch Day is now a two day event! From 10 a.m. Tuesday until 10 p.m. Wednesday, I will be taking one word prompts.
FSD will always be free of the obligation to pay, however, I am going to be instating a number of new tip incentives both collectively and individually, as detailed below.
Current Tip Tally: $20
Tip tally amounts (collective tips):
A few important notes:
1) I'm going to stop taking fan art prompts, or interpreting prompts as fan art, just to be legally safe.
2) If you leave a prompt, I would be very grateful if you spread the word about FSD in whatever way seems best to you. I'm not going to make it a requirement, but more people visiting FSD means a greater likelihood that everyone will be getting color sketches!
3) I'm not going to be creating artwork in real time anymore, as I'm going to be holding this over a two-day period. I will, however, get to each request in a reasonable amount of time (which will vary depending on whether or not it is a quick sketch, a digitally inked sketch, or a color sketch).
Also, once a month, I will hold a prize drawing for one piece of free digitally inked and colorized artwork based on the FSD prompt of the winner's choice. January's winner was

Tutorial: Drawing Eyes
Feb. 10th, 2012 05:27 pmAs promised earlier in the week, tonight I'm going to share a tutorial on drawing human eyes. This one focuses on female eyes, but can be applied to male eyes with a little tweaking.

Free Sketch Day
Feb. 7th, 2012 10:06 amGood morning, friends list, visitors, and lurkers! Once again, it is Tuesday, which means that it is the (somewhat) weekly Free Sketch Day that I host on this blog.
So, come on in, make yourselves comfortable, and leave your one word prompts. I will create a free sketch for every prompt left. You can leave more than one prompt if you want, but do be aware that I'm only one person and that there are others waiting for sketches as well, so please be reasonable and considerate with the number of requests. :) Today, as I have to handle a caretaker shift for an unwell family member, I will need to close for prompts at 3 pm CST; at that point I'll start screening comments for this post.
FSD (Free Sketch Day) will ALWAYS be free of the obligation to pay; however, I am going to add a Tip Jar to the bottom of each weekly post. The funds accrued from these tips will go to funding finished digitally inked and colorized artwork.
Also, once a month, I will hold a prize drawing for one piece of free digitally inked and colorized artwork based on the FSD prompt of the winner's choice.
And that's about it. Have at it!
Some sketches from previous FSDs

As no one voted for the next crowdfunding pieces, I will begin work on these three:

The first one (the landscape) will be digitally painted, and the other two will be digitally inked and colorized.
