This Week

Hello, all!

I'm here with a post to let you know what to expect this week.  As some of you know, I had a generous helping of disaster last week, which resulted in my becoming behind on everything.  So this week, I'm not going to hold any live events-- no Free Sketch Days or Character Portrait Days-- in order to play catch-up.

Those of you with portraits paid for, you can expect them sometime this week.  They're first priority.

I will also be working on the color projects, and hopefully get a good chunk of them done and updates posted.

If-- IF-- I've managed to catch up decently by Friday, I'll illustrate, write up, and post the Drawing Hair tutorial I mentioned earlier.

Update

Hello, all.

So, this week was such a wash it wasn't even funny.  It seemed as though one thing after another went haywire and insane.  But-- the week is over!  (thank the gods)

This coming week, I hope to catch up on what I got behind on this week.  I'm going to forgo a calendar posting to [livejournal.com profile] crowdfunding, because I really just need to get up to the present.  However, I will probably hold Free Sketch Day over two days like I did last week.  I'm going to try to catch up on character portraits, so I'm putting Character Portrait Day on hold until I'm current on all that.  If I'm caught up by Thursday, I'll open up for more portraits.  And I'm going to hopefully have that hair tutorial up on Friday.  Sorry guys for not getting to everything I said I was going to post this week.  I feel like I've been put through the heavy spin cycle in an industrial strength washing machine.  (That analogy comes directly and completely from those years I spent in a resort laundry room)

Also considering cleaning up a short story I wrote several years ago and illustrating it, as a crowdfunding project.  Maybe I'll post it on Kickstarter.  That's a future project, though-- really don't have the time for it right now.

I just posted some backdated entries with a bit of my original writing and updated tags, if anyone's interested.  It's a bit of an eclectic collection-- a few short stories, a longer work in progress, some free verse poetry, and some creative prose.  It's mostly unpolished.  There's more, but I'd have to dig around on various online haunts to find it all.  Anyone interested in seeing more?

Also, because I'm so slow and behind on cool technology and internet things, I've finally given in and gotten Spotify.  I'm not sure why I waited so long.  I love it!

So, yeah, that's the fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants update.  Later, guys!

Dear friends,

I'm starting to feel a bit better today.  Still a bit sore, and now headachey to boot, but I'm no longer having that hot-poker-stabbing-me-in-the-shoulder-blade feeling, or the accompanying knock-me-sideways muscle spasms.  .

Managed one sketch today.  I opened up my latest character portrait WIP but haven't really been able to do much.  Hopefully will be able to kick up the art pace tomorrow.

I'm really glad this week is almost over.  Maybe next week will be better.  *crosses fingers and toes*

Okay, so it seems I have a pinched nerve in my back now. Can barely sit up. Managed one quick sketch but that's it. Sorry guys, but artwork will be on hold for a bit.
P.S., Universe, this sucks. I'd like to file an official complaint.

Good morning, friends list, visitors, and lurkers! Once again, it is Tuesday, which means that it is the weekly Free Sketch Day that I host on this blog.

But this time, I'm going to be doing things a little bit differently.

Free Sketch Day is now a two day event!  From 10 a.m. Tuesday until 10 p.m. Wednesday, I will be taking one word prompts.

FSD will always be free of the obligation to pay, however, I am going to be instating a number of new tip incentives both collectively and individually, as detailed below.

Tip tally amounts (collective tips):

$0-- Everyone gets one free sketch based on a one word prompt.
$25- Everyone either gets 2 sketches based on one word prompts, or 1 digitally inked sketch based on a prompt.
$50-- Everyone gets 2 digitally inked sketches based on one word prompts.
$200-- 1 out of the 2 digitally inked sketches for each prompter will be fully colorized.
$300-- Everyone gets 2 digitally inked and colorized sketches.

Individual tipper incentives (Please take note that I can only ship in the US at this time.  If you live in another country, I will be able to send you a download, but I just can't afford to send out prints that will cost $13 or more to ship):

$3- $10-- One 6x4 unframed Photo Print of your choice and a high res download.
$11- $30-- Two 6x4 unframed Photo Prints of your choice, or one 10x8 unframed Photo Print and high res downloads.
$31- $80-- Two 10x8 unframed Photo Prints and high res downloads.
$81 and up -- One 10x8 Framed and Matted Photo Print (standard frame, standard matte) and high res downloads.
(Images may be resized or cropped to fit the print sizes)

A few notes:

1)  I'm going to stop taking fan art prompts, or interpreting prompts as fan art, just to be legally safe.

2)  If you leave a prompt, I would be very grateful if you spread the word about FSD in whatever way seems best to you.  I'm not going to make it a requirement, but more people visiting FSD means a greater likelihood that everyone will be getting color sketches!

3)  I'm not going to be creating artwork in real time anymore, as I'm going to be holding this over a two-day period.  I will, however, get to each request in a reasonable amount of time (which will vary depending on whether or not it is a quick sketch, a digitally inked sketch, or a color sketch).

Also, once a month, I will hold a prize drawing for one piece of free digitally inked and colorized artwork based on the FSD prompt of the winner's choice.  January's winner was [livejournal.com profile] minor_architect, who will be receiving this illustration when completed:

And that's about it. Have at it!

Update: 3/5/12:  "Starcrossed" has been completed.  Funding currently stands at $4 of $40.

UPDATE:  2/27/12
"Trickster Fae" has been inked! (Click for full size)

This is the landing page for my three current crowdfunding projects.  I will continuously link back here with updates.

The center image is the only one with a title-- "Trickster."  If any of you have suggestions for the other two, feel free to comment!

Current status of each (clicky to enlarge):

The funding goals for these three images are:

Waterfall:  $100
Trickster fey:  $40
Kissing couple:  $40

Funding stats:
"Trickster": $0 of $40.
"Starcrossed": $4 of $40
Waterfall painting (as yet unnamed):  $0 of $100.

If you would like to contribute to any or all of these projects, please click the "Tip Jar" icon below.  Also, please be sure to leave me a comment or a PM to let me know you contributed, and for what project, so I can be sure to send you prints of the projects you contributed to when they are complete!  (Sorry, I can only do U.S. shipping at this time-- I can't afford international rates)  When a project is fully funded, the full sized image will be released to the public.

Any contributors will receive the full size, high res file in a link, and U.S. based contributors will receive a print of the project they donated to.  Size of print depends on donation.

I'll also use this as the landing page for "Firespirit," the Prize Drawing piece I'm creating for [livejournal.com profile] minor_architect.

I have some art things to work on today, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to get to them.

I was awakened abruptly this morning by what sounded like the house being bombed.  But no, it was actually the ceiling in the upstairs bathroom, right next to my bedroom, caving in.  The concrete ceiling.

Ah, bad luck is my FAVORITE THING!!!  </sarcasm>  Though I am grateful nobody was in there when that happened, so I suppose the luck is however you perceive it.

Seriously, though, I'm ready for some good things to happen.  Any day would be nice.

Sometime today, whenever I have the time to do it properly, I'll finish up the post for this week's calendar and put it up on [livejournal.com profile] crowdfunding.  And I'll be working on some artwork if I can manage it.

Mondays.  Gotta love em.

It's been a very productive week, with three character portraits completed, fourteen sketches for Free Sketch Day, and two crowdfunding projects and a prize drawing illustration started.

Character Portraits:

From left to right (from the last two weeks):  [livejournal.com profile] timelord1's Rowenne Kennock and Jaerus, [livejournal.com profile] ellenmillion's Torn World character Ivarra, [livejournal.com profile] timelord1's creature the Uilebheist, and [livejournal.com profile] just_the_ash's character Angamarth.

Prize Drawing Illustration:

I completed the line art for [livejournal.com profile] minor_architect's prize drawing illustration.  I'm calling this one Firespirit. (Note: nudity, so full size sketch is not work safe!)

Crowdfunded pieces:

Blocked in the flat colors over the sketch for the waterfall painting, as yet untitled.

And completed the line art for Trickster.

Remember, the waterfall painting and "Trickster" are open for crowdfunding!  Contribute to whichever one you like by clicking the "Tip Jar" icon.  Be sure to specify what you want tips to go toward, and let me know what your LJ ID is so I can keep track of everyone and send out perks when they're ready.

Good evening, all.  :)

As promised earlier in the week, tonight I'm going to share a tutorial on drawing human eyes.  This one focuses on female eyes, but can be applied to male eyes with a little tweaking.

Tutorial is behind cut. )

Two down on the backlog list!   Eight more projects to go.  I really need to divide up my days so I can work on more than one project a day.  I've always worked several projects at once, but I've also always been terrible at goal setting.  Tuesdays are usually taken up by Free Sketch Day, so project work will have to be on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

So, I should set goals.  Tomorrow's goals:

1)  Line art for [livejournal.com profile] just_the_ash's Moraiwe.
2)  Refine Prize Drawing sketch and prepare for digital inks.
3)  Block in basic colors for waterfall painting.
4)  Refine the fae sketch and prepare for digital inks.
5)  Tutorial: Drawing Eyes.  (I almost forgot)

I'll get the hang of this one of these days!

Having seen [livejournal.com profile] meeksp post a chart of her current art projects, I thought it might be a good idea to create a list of my backlog here so I can keep everything straight.  I can't figure out how to do the nifty chart graphics (it might be something that needs to be uploaded, or something only available to paid users) but I can do lists, so here it is.

CURRENT BACKLOG PROJECT LIST AS IF 2/8/12

Discounted Character Portrait Days (in order of request):
1)  The Uilebheist for [livejournal.com profile] timelord1
2)  Angamarth for [livejournal.com profile] just_the_ash
3)  Moraiwe for [livejournal.com profile] just_the_ash
4)  Seamus Kennock for [livejournal.com profile] timelord1
5)  Maeve Kennock for [livejournal.com profile] timelord1

Crowdfunded projects based on Free Sketch Day sketches:

Prize Drawing Winner illustration based on FSD sketch:

Miscellaneous:
1)  Color character illustration for Portrait Adoption.

So... ten projects at the moment.  Need to figure out how to divide up the work throughout my days so I can get them all done.

EDIT:  Because I'm braindead, I forgot to include the icon commissions from a friend who is building a web site.  Approximately 8 icons.  I'm writing this here because of said tendency to be braindead, so I don't forget.  :P

Have an original role playing character, or an original fiction character that you would like to see realized in a drawing?

I'm once again open for character portrait commissions.  These will be head-and-shoulders portraits.  Black and white portraits are only $5!

I still have a small backlog of portraits to complete; every commission will be completed in the order they were asked for.

Color options are also available during Portrait Days at heavy discount.

Go to last week's landing page for more information and to put in your order.

Today's Free Sketch Day is now closed; comments on this entry will be set to screened.  Thank you as always to everyone who participated!  I will continue working on prompts throughout the day as I have the time; I will get to all of you by tonight.

Good morning, friends list, visitors, and lurkers! Once again, it is Tuesday, which means that it is the (somewhat) weekly Free Sketch Day that I host on this blog.

So, come on in, make yourselves comfortable, and leave your one word prompts. I will create a free sketch for every prompt left. You can leave more than one prompt if you want, but do be aware that I'm only one person and that there are others waiting for sketches as well, so please be reasonable and considerate with the number of requests. :)  Today, as I have to handle a caretaker shift for an unwell family member, I will need to close for prompts at 3 pm CST; at that point I'll start screening comments for this post.

FSD (Free Sketch Day) will ALWAYS be free of the obligation to pay; however, I am going to add a Tip Jar to the bottom of each weekly post. The funds accrued from these tips will go to funding finished digitally inked and colorized artwork.

Also, once a month, I will hold a prize drawing for one piece of free digitally inked and colorized artwork based on the FSD prompt of the winner's choice.

And that's about it. Have at it!

[livejournal.com profile] minor_architect won the Prize Drawing yesterday!  This person will receive a digitally inked and colorized image based on the below image (click to enlarge):

As no one voted for the next crowdfunding pieces, I will begin work on these three:

The first one (the landscape) will be digitally painted, and the other two will be digitally inked and colorized.
shadows_gallery: (Default)
So, to give a bit more variety, I thought I'd test working three crowdfunded pieces simultaneously. I will be doing two digitally inked and colorized pieces and one digital painting. And you guys get to vote on what I'll be doing!

So, go check out my last two FSD compilation posts, linked to here, and vote for three images each. The winners will be the next projects I commence with. Voting closes at 10 p.m. tonight, and results will be announced tomorrow at 10 a.m.

It's time for the January FSD Prize Drawing to win a digitally inked and colorized illustration based on one of the FSD sketches listed in the below links.

Follow the links, choose one sketch that you would like to see completed, and then come back and comment on *this* entry with your choice. I will then write down all the applicants, place the names in a cup, and draw one name at random to be the winner. The winner will receive a link to the full sized image when it is completed.

January 31

Have at it! Good luck, everyone! Winner will be announced tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Finished the rough line art for the next character portrait commission on the list just now (Ivara from Torn World), and will finish it up tomorrow sometime.  Just spent far too long reading about the cultural significance of beads on the Torn World site; the detail put into this project is fantastic!

It occurs to me that it's time to hold a prize drawing for a free colorized drawing!  I'll put that on the agenda for Monday, in addition to holding a vote for the next three crowdfunded projects I'll be doing.  I think I may do two digitally inked and colorized illustrations and one digital painting.  Also next week will be the regular Free Sketch Day (Tuesday) and Discounted Character Portrait Days (Wednesday and Thursday), so be sure to drop by for those!

I'm considering whether it would be better to do a weekly schedule post to [livejournal.com profile] crowdfunding instead of posting whenever I have an event on my blog, because events are beginning to be every day.  I think I may give that a try, because I'm starting to feel like I'm hogging the community.

We've had about two solid days of rain here.  The yard is starting to flood in places.  And, wonder of wonders, it's actually getting a little bit-- just slightly-- cool outside.  We've had a very warm winter this year.  I miss the snow in California-- yes, it got to be a little ridiculous after awhile, but it was still beautiful.  I did, however, have a very bad habit of slipping on the ice.  I blame my southern upbringing for my lack of balance on icy hills.

I think, at this point, I've run out of things to say and am just typing because I am afraid insomnia will kick in when I try to go to bed.  But, I suppose I'll draw this to a close.  Good night, all!

shadows_gallery: (Default)
So, I thought I would put together a little tutorial on how I create the character portraits for my weekly Discounted Character Portrait Days. I create these images in Gimp using a Wacom tablet; this tutorial will focus more on technique and less on the technical aspects of the program and tablet.

This is a portrait of [livejournal.com profile] timelord1's character Jaerus. She gave me a detailed description and a picture reference for his armor, which can be found here under the first character description. She also specified that she pictures Jonathon Rhys-Meyers in the role, so that gave me an idea of what the character will look like.

The very first thing I do is scour the web for references. As she has given an actor as a reference, I look for images of him. In other character portraits, I try to think of appropriate actors/actresses and use them as references. I don't always aim for a strict likeness; sometimes the reference is used very loosely just to give a *feel* of the character. But in this instance, I'm trying to give more of an impression that the characterresembles the actor, without really going for a tight likeness.

There are a LOT of images under cut. )

I have too many Live Journals, but I don't want to delete them.  For some reason, every few years, I seem to drift to new blogs.  I don't know why.  I suppose I'm just capricious.

I looked up my old [livejournal.com profile] siabha_maellyn blog this morning.  It's been three years since I updated it.  I realize it's been ages since I've written anything as intensely personal as what I routinely wrote in that blog.  Even my poetry was torn from my heart and soul, sculpted in word-pictures what plain speech would never describe.  I mean, I still often ramble to de-stress about things in my personal LJ, but to really write out the intricate complexities of my thoughts and feelings... I think I no longer really know how to express them, to articulate things that run too deep for words.  That makes me sad somehow, as though I've somehow grown detached from myself, lost something of who I am.  Or maybe in trying to conceal myself from others, to put on a face that might be deemed acceptable, I've hidden from myself as well.

Today, I'm going to work on portraits.  I started one yesterday evening but wound up erasing it because I didn't like the way it was looking. (I wonder if I'm just being too self-critical again, as people always tell me I am)  Hopefully today's work will be more fruitful.

I wish I could blink my eyes and be in various parts of the world so I can visit with friends I haven't seen in far too long.  That would be absolutely perfect.
